Conspiracies & fake news about “frankenstein” meat with Dr. Daniel Jolley

Do you love conspiracy theories? Are you intrigued by fake news? Hear from the expert in its consequences, Daniel Jolley.

We are excited to renew our media partnership with Red to Green for Season 3!

Red to Green is a Podcast dedicated to providing content on sustainable food innovations, founded and hosted by Marina Schmidt. What sets Red to Green apart from other food tech podcasts is that instead of adopting the more common approach of each episode discussing different topics, they chose a storytelling approach. Indeed, Red to Green grouped their conversations by seasons of about 12 to 14 episodes, each season covering one theme at a time. Organizing the podcast this way allows for a deeper and better understanding of the designated topic and to build up the audience’s knowledge towards the following subjects.

Season 1 encompasses different aspects about cultured meat and cellular agriculture, from introducing it to what it is and why it is revolutionary to hearing the perspectives of investors and consumer adoption.

Season 2 moves towards a conversation surrounding plastic alternatives and sustainable food packaging. We hear from experts and innovators in the field differentiating between different types of sustainable packaging, greenwashing, recycling and much more.

Season 3 is all about understanding how to promote alternative proteins and consumer acceptance.

Episode 5’s guest is Dr Daniel Jolley, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychology at Northumbria University in the UK. He is one of the leading figures in researching conspiracy theories, focusing on its consequences. Dr Jolley has been featured in several internationally important newspapers and his media engagement has had an estimated reach of 1 billion people.

If you haven’t already guessed, this episode is all about: conspiracy theories. Marina and Daniel discuss how these theories come about, how to convince skeptics about a new subject, how to engage in communication, how to deal with fake news when a new topic such as cultured meat reaches the mainstream media while giving very fun examples along the way and more!

Here is an interesting quote from Daniel Jolley that illustrates how powerful conspiracy theories can be: “We know with conspiracy theories that once people are exposed to them, they can be very resistant to correction. And also they can be very influential, straight away. They can impact us without us realizing. I mean by that is research has shown that when you’re exposed to this, these narratives, it makes you think differently about that event, whilst it wouldn’t impact your behaviors immediately, of course, because you need to eat much digest information and it takes a bit of a time for you to actually impact your behavior.”It’s an entertaining and quite unexpected topic but very relevant nowadays! You can listen to the episode here.
